Portable Tuned Mass Dampers
Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are devices that can be used to reduce the vibration of structures. A TMD consists of a small mass (typically a very small fraction of the main vibrating system mass) connected by a spring and damper to the main structure. TMDs are tuned to have a natural frequency close to the natural frequency of the floor structure so that at resonance they counteract the movements of the vibrating structure and reduce their amplitude. The main focus of this research is to develop Portable Tuned Mass Dampers (PTMDs) that can be readily assembled, tuned, and placed within a floor plenum or externally on a floor or being suspended from it.

Prototype PTMDs have been developed and tested on the VTL test floors. The results have shown that PTMDs can be a viable option for alleviating excessive floor vibrations.
